Thailand is known as the world's largest producer of colored gemstones. Currently, Thailand has tens of thousands of jewelry manufacturing and trading businesses. Considered to be embedded in the DNA, Thai workers are renowned for their intricate craftsmanship, which is irreplaceable by the modern machinery. As Thailand entered into the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015 which resulted in free movement of goods and services including  skilled labor, the government by the Ministry of Labor has developed strategic plan to drive skill standards in order for Thailand to benefit from the free movement of skilled labor.. Furthermore, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) which comprises ASEAN countries and China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand, is the world's largest free trade agreement. It has a population of more than 2.2 billion people, accounting for 30% of the world's population, with a combined GDP of more than 26.2 trillion US dollars or about 30% of the world GDP. In 2020, Thai gems and jewelry exports to RCEP countries accounted for more than 30%.It is undeniable that this economic partnership will open opportunity for the movement of skilled labor as well as intense competition to the local market due to the influx of cheap goods.. Therefore, the development of occupational standards and professional qualifications in the gem and jewelry industry will develop the workforce to have the required skills which meet international standards; thus, increase trade opportunities accordingly.
